joseph-boldenPastors, brothers, and friends, there are many adjectives that may come to mind when we think about the state of manhood today. Hurt, anger, disappointment, and bitterness may even be a few of emotions welling out of the hearts of 72% of fatherless African American children.  What’s probably more surprising than this, is that we are no longer really surprised by these numbers.  When we think about the men in our families like our fathers, our grandfathers, and uncles, what comes to mind?  As bad as it may seem, it’s not all bad. There is hope. Here are few ways I believe that the Mannafest Men’s Conference will not only impact myself individually, but also my entire family, my community, and the church for generations.

If there were anything that the Christian community didn’t need more of right now, it would probably be more conferences. So it would seem that this Mannafest Men’s Conference would be another feeble attempt to inspire a few hundred men to love Jesus better and become a better leader for a weekend. Well brothers, if we want to see God take His eternal sledgehammer and shatter the chains that has been holding manhood back from being the image of God for generations, it’s going to take more than just an inspirational weekend. Pastor Blake Wilson said this, “Men don’t need inspiration, men need information.” We need tools! I recently got married this past October, and became a father to a 7 year old at the same time. In my short time of being married and being a step-father, I can honestly say that it has been tough. Relying on the Word of God and praying constantly has been my only reasonable response to some of the things we’ve had to face so far in this early relationship. But what about the guy who doesn’t know the Word of God, and doesn’t know how to pray when things get difficult? See brothers, we don’t need just another conference. We need to be equipped. We need some resources that we can use daily, years after the conference. We need something that not only hits the core, but also causes a deep ripple in our families and communities.

I remember growing up and being around my dad when he was working on cars.  It was annoying because I didn’t want to work on a car that wasn’t mine! I’d rather be up the street, playing ball with my boys. Not to mention my dad had so many tools! Tools were everywhere. I had tools chasing me in my dreams! He would have a couple toolboxes that I dreaded because he would send me to look for something he needed, and it took the life out of me to find it. Recently my car needed some new brake pads, and my dad said he could handle it. While he was working on it, he asked me to pass him a few tools.  As I was looking for what he needed, it hit me that he needed all these different tools to solve different problems with the cars he works on. The same goes for us when it comes to life. We need the inexhaustible Word of God to solve the inexhaustible problems we face as men.  This reminds me of 1 Kings 2:1-4.  As David was drawing near to his death, he gave his son Solomon some tools he would need to govern the kingdom as David’s protégé. He tells him in verse 2 to show himself a man and then tells him how to do that.  He tells him to keep the charge of the LORD his God, to walk in His ways, while keeping His statutes, His commandments, His ordinances, and His testimonies according to what is written in the Law of Moses, so that he would succeed in all that he would do and wherever he would turn. This is severely similar to the charge the LORD gave to Joshua after the death of Moses.

My point is that if we want to be successful as men, we need to have the living and abiding Word of God in our tool belts and in our hearts. I know this conference will help guide not only myself but also others to the manual for manhood. We need God’s Word to invade every area of our lives such as, our family life, our single life, our vocation, our mindset, and even our desires.  I love how the brothers have highlighted the Scripture that our LORD Jesus uses in Matthew 4:4 that says, “MAN SHALL NOT LIVE BY BREAD ALONE, BUT ON EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD.”

In closing, brothers this Mannafest Men’s Conference will give us the tools that we can take home and use daily. The conference will provide resources like “Kingdom Man” by Pastor Tony Evans, “Manhood Restored” by Pastor Eric Mason, and the “33 The Series” by Pastors Bryan Carter and John Bryson. I would like to urge and challenge every man, young and old to join us in this massive opportunity to “Mannafest Manhood” after the conference is over. You don’t want to miss it! Grace & Peace,
Joseph Bolden
